It is based in Porto and is represented in Coimbra, Lisbon, Évora, Faro, Angra do Heroísmo, Ponta Delgada and Funchal. It represents education and teaching inspectors from the mainland and the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira. It covers pre-school education and basic, secondary and higher education. SIEE's objectives are, in particular, to defend the rights of its members, both individually and as a professional group, and to promote and support actions aimed at improving living and working conditions and dignifying the function.

It is an independent, non-political and non-profit organisation. Today, the union brings together more than 48,000 of its members - teachers, professionals and non-teaching staff from all types and levels of schools and educational establishments. It is therefore the second largest union in Slovakia and the largest union in the non-industrial sphere. With the creation of the Association of Basic Education, the Association of Secondary Education and the Association of Universities and Direct Management Organisations and the operation of individual professional sections, the union's activities are moving closer to the membership base. The Union has district and regional councils of grassroots organisations set up in the regions in accordance with the associations' membership, which have proportional representation on the Union's decision-making bodies.
